Why does Catherine walk a few steps BEHIND William?

I've noticed lately, that whenever Catherine & William are attending a public function, he's walking a few steps ahead of her. Why is this? I realize there is protocol when it comes to Royalty, but they are a modern couple, but is the old-fashioned protocol still in place, that she walks a few steps behind him?
